"A Nuclear Free Pacific" - a fifty two minute documentary co-production for Channel 4 (UK), Television New Zealand and the New Zealand Film Commission. The programme tells the story of the formation of the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone from the point of view of community activists and politicians. Shot in New Zealand, Australia, Cook Islands, Fiji,Tonga, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea the documentary was produced by Pacific Stories Partnership, established by producers Alister Barry (Vanguard Films, Wellington, NZ) and Phil Shingler(UK). Screened on both Channel 4 and TVNZ the programme was also acquired by SBS(Australia), NHK(Japan) and Jordanian Television.

The 55 minute video tells the story of the growth of antinuclear sentiment in the South pacific region leading to the 1985 Raratonga Treaty which created a nuclear free zone in the South Pacific. Filmed in eight countries the story backgrounds the experiences of bomb testing and the nuclear arms race which led to the formation of the Nuclear Free Pacific Movement. This movement joined with some newly independent states to push forward the proposal for a nuclear free zone at the South pacific Forum where political forces for and against the Treaty were played out.

American and French admirals reveal their concers, radiation victims, activists and prime ministers, including David Lange(New Zealand), Walter Lini(Vanuatu) and Bob Hawke (Australia) recount their experiences of negotiating the Treaty.

Underscoring the imagery is Pacific music ranging from traditional string bands and choirs to contemporary rock groups "Midnight Oil" and the"Herbs"
